Greetings and welcome to the Kwame Nkrumah Academy’s Village web site! It is an honor and privilege to serve as principal for such an outstanding community of parents, teachers and students. As we begin this journey, I endeavor to build upon the foundation of great work begun in this place. I will continue to run with the vision that has been set forth by the Board of Trustees, that Kwame Nkrumah Academy be a global model of African-centered teaching and learning and a center of academic excellence and uncompromised expression. At Kwame Nkrumah Academy, students are our primary concern and we take the responsibility for their intellectual, social and emotional development seriously. We strive for distinction in teaching and learning, distinction in our commitment to the local community, and distinction in preparing students for participation in the global community. Our students experience reading and writing instruction by which they are able to develop critical thinking skills and strategies needed for success. Our math and science instruction utilizes open-ended, hands-on explorations, with an emphasis on applying the skills learned to real world situations. Our social studies program is infused with cultural exploration and social development enriched with the seven virtues of [...]

Although critics see cultural curriculum as separatist and unnecessary, educators at Kwame Nkrumah Academy say the opposite. The charter school, located on Chicago's South Side, has an African cultural focus that the staff says provides students with a sense of pride. Teachers and administrators work to embed traditional African heritage into every school day starting with the morning "village circle" on to teaching Swahili and historical African rituals. They say that the lessons their students learn at Kwame Nkrumah, such as responsibility, accountability and respect, will carry throughout the rest of their lives.
